The club was founded in 1909 by a young Basque who studied in the UK and discovered football there. It is one of the oldest and most respected clubs in Spain. The club started strong and won its first Cup – the Copa del Rey in 1909. They will have to wait until the 1980s to return to their era of success, when they won LaLiga twice in a row, a Spanish Super Cup and a Copa del Rey. The 1980s also marked the end of the era of “only Basque” players and they began to sign international players like John Aldridge who came from Liverpool. Their last victory was in 2019-20, when they won the Copa del Rey for the third time in their history. The Reale Arena, also known as the Anoeta Stadium, became their stadium in 1993, with a capacity of 32,000 seats.
